Holy Smoking Engine, Batman!

Posted by the*point*man 16 November 2006 at 10:47AM

Would you want to continue flying after seeing something like this out of your airplane window?

fire

If not, too bad – because the pilots decided to continue forward with the trans-pacific flight anyway!

From the Guardian:

Air traffic controllers monitoring a British Airways jumbo jet were stunned at the pilot’s decision to try to “get as far as we can” after an engine caught fire on takeoff, a transcript of discussions between the plane and the control tower revealed.

The controllers in Los Angeles expected the four-engine Boeing 747 to turn around but, after taking advice from BA’s operations base, the pilot carried on towards London. He told air traffic control: “We just decided we want to set off on our flight-plan route and get as far as we can.”

The picture doesn’t go with the news story but it gives you a visual as to what it might look like.

One of my biggest gripes with United’s website is the unresponsiveness. Everything seems to take a relatively long time to load – a result of trying to cram as much useless crap into the pages as possible.

The new beta site seems to deal with that issue. It is much more responsive and carries a cleaner interface.

Check it out at http://www.united.com/page/article/0,,51883,00.html

If you fly every week on United, you’ll qualify without having to do anything besides just being you. Seriously.

BUT, you need to REGISTER FIRST before your flights qualify!

  • 5,000 bonus miles for completing one qualifying roundtrip†
  • 10,000 bonus miles for completing two qualifying roundtrips

For those of you who want more control over your in-flight entertainment, you’ll soon be able to use your iPod to drive the output of audio and video on the airplane.

Benefits include:

  • Being able to watch TV shows or movies on larger seat-back monitors, ranging from 7 to 23 inches, depending on cabin class
  • Connections that would power and charge iPods in flight

That’s good news, but it won’t be available to everyone.

There are a few caveats:

  • Only the a few airlines have announced this connection (United, Delta, Continental, Air France, Emirates and KLM airlines)
  • The service will be available only in seats that have in-flight entertainment systems in place, typically first- or business-class seats.
  • Available starting mid-2007

To quote the original article from USA Today:

United plans to introduce iPod connections next year in first and business class in the wide-body aircraft that fly internationally. The Chicago-based carrier will install iPod connections when the planes are put out of service to upgrade its first-class and business cabins.

Delta will install iPod connections initially in its Boeing 757s that fly from New York and Atlanta to West Coast cities. The Atlanta-based carrier chose the 48 transcontinental aircraft to roll out the service because their seats, including the ones in coach, have already been equipped with a new in-flight entertainment system.

Delta hopes to expand the iPod connection service by 2008 to 767s and 737s that also fly long-haul domestic flights, Delta executive Joan Vincenz says. It hopes to eventually install it on international flights, she says.

Continental plans to introduce the service by the end of 2007. While the airline hasn’t firmed up its plans on how it will be introduced, it will probably start with the 41 757s that fly internationally, spokesman Dave Messing says.

Sounds great for travelers riding business or first class in wide-bodied planes with personal in-flight entertainment systems, flying long-haul domestic or international flights!

This entry’s source of inspiration is focused on saving cellphone minutes. For the typical business traveler, this is usually not an issue. Our calling plans typically take into account long conference calls and phone calls to family and friends, both of which warrant not pinching on the minutes.

Nonetheless, I truly dislike waiting for the voice-mail announcement to complete before being able to leave a voice message. You know what I’m talking about:

“Hi, this is John Doe, I’m not here right now so please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you.” followed by the TWELVE-SECOND digital lady who explains, “When you’re finished recording, you may hang up, or press 1 for more options”

So there lies the benefit for me – being able to shut down the announcement and get to the message tone. Saving on the minutes is only secondary to leaving the message and getting off the phone.

I shall wait no longer and neither shall you as long as you know the carrier of the person you are trying to reach.

How To OWN the Airplane Armrest

Posted by the*point*man 06 November 2006 at 09:47PM

I have not tried this myself so try this at your own risk. I suggest testing it on someone who is much smaller than you.

Wired magazine explains how to capture the armrest on an airplane with 3 easy steps.

3 Steps to Armrest Checkmate:

  1. Midway through takeoff, recline your seat 2 inches.
  2. Slip your elbow into the gap between your neighbor’s seat back and your own.
  3. Slowly pivot your arm forward till it dominates the disputed territory.

If you need pictures, then visit the source.

Good luck!
