Best Website for Flight Status

According to this Wall Street Journal article, FlightStats.com had the most accurate and up-to-date information. For those of you with a web-enabled cell phone, they also have a mobile-friendly website here. I’ve used FlightStats in the past and found the information very accurate – they even provide the gate number of your flight if it’s available.

I recommend skipping the airline websites, as their updates are flaky at best, and see if FlightStats.com works for you.

Happy flying and may you (almost) always get home on time.

From the same folks that brought you MileMaven.com, comes another site aimed at maximizing your points as a frequent traveler. I introduce PointMaven.com focused on maximizing hotel points.

Directly from the site owner:

Enter a city (or airport code), and you get a cool map (“PointMap”) of all properties that offer bonus points, aggregated by brand and loyalty program, along with a list of all double/triple/bonus point promotions.

Very cool.

As a seasoned frequent traveler, my top priority is getting home as quickly and painlessly as possible. That’s what is most important to me, but points are the primary currency of our lifestyle and helps make the week-to-week traveling a little easier to swallow. It affords us trips to far-away places at reduced prices through free airline tickets, hotel stays, and car rentals. Take advantage of it, but don’t live for it.

PointMaven.com let’s you do that with minimal hassle. That’s why I like it.

Thanks for the tip and good luck with your site, Boaz!

While surfing the web for something totally unrelated, I stumbled across MileMaven.com which promotes itself with the byline of Earn the Most Miles on Every Trip.

Simply enter the departure and arrival airport codes and it will return all promotions available based on that segment.

Other search options let you enter frequent flyer program, airline code or just retrieve the most popular programs. I tested out one of the promotions (additional 1000 bonus points) and it took me to a valid promotion on the United website.

The search results also provide links to various Flyertalk discussions on related airports / segments. Not a bad tool to keep in your back pocket.

Looks like it also won a honorable mention from the Washington Post.

One of my biggest gripes with United’s website is the unresponsiveness. Everything seems to take a relatively long time to load – a result of trying to cram as much useless crap into the pages as possible.

The new beta site seems to deal with that issue. It is much more responsive and carries a cleaner interface.
